So last week I shared some tips for working with reality and embracing the television in our decor. Today, I'll share the trouble spot sent in by last week's winner, Nicole.
For starters, Nicole's home is lovely. It's really well pulled together and gets gorgeous natural light. She has fantastic taste and knows what she likes so she made this first challenge pretty easy for me. The house is a wide-line high ranch with spaces that flow into each other really well. That said, the wall the television sits on is shared with the dining room, so connecting the spaces while creating distinct zones can be a challenge. Here's her dilemma:
"I am in desperate need of assistance with our tv wall in the living room. The space is dull, boring, needs shelves, texture, etc. I have been waiting to personalize this space for three years. I hate sitting on the couch because I feel this blank space staring at me."
Looking at her photo it seems like this spot is really the one thing in the space that doesn't fit. Everything else is well scaled and coordinates with each other. The wall itself is vast, and after chatting with Nicole, she was unsure of where to start and end anything she might add.
Her Pinterest boards were full of images like these:
While custom built-ins are an ideal solution, right now they're just not in the cards. Like so many of us with young families, a more budget friendly option is a necessity. Here are my suggestions for a Quick Fix:
- Purchase a modular unit that can provide concealed storage for dvds, games, toys etc. and also have room for displaying books and accessories.
- Down the road, when the budget and time allows for it, consider having it customized to achieve the look of a built-in like this:
- Embellish the backs of the unit with paint, Stikwood, or wallpaper for interest and fun like this:
Thankfully, Nicole is eager for the challenge and totally receptive to these ideas. Even better, she's super motivated to tackle this so I can't wait to see and share how this space comes together.
Do you have a design dilemma you'd love for me to lay eyes on? I'm giving away another Quick Fix to the first person who comments below.
